Kiddos & Hair Cuts - Make it Successful

Does your little one have anxiety going to a salon?  Tried everything?  Here are a few tips to make the hair cut a little more bearable - for every one .

Don't take all of your children at the same time - this tends to create a frenzy of children and parents often have a difficult time relaying their ideal cut for their kiddo when they are distracted and end up disappointed.

Ask the stylist to go slow and show your child the shears, let them feel the buzzer in their hands and next to their ear before the service even begins.

Don't let the stylist assume your child will be ok with a cape being thrown over them for the service.  My kiddos need to touch and feel and have an explanation for what is going to happen and why (it protects them from itchy hair).  I also have a kid cape - it has lots of animals and colors - it gives me a springboard for conversation during the hair cut.

Here is something that worked for me:

One of my biggest success happened with a boy (4 years) who I knew was going to fight me tooth and nail and was a wiggly little one.  I went through the above steps, but since I work at people's homes, I took him into a bathroom that was away from the other children, with a parent - it was quiet so he didn't have to deal with the added distraction of his siblings.  I pulled out my secret weapon, hoping it would work and it did.  Where he happened to be seated was directly across where I had placed his favorite candy.  I told him that as soon as we were done, he could have the candy.  He was immediately concerned that his sister and friend would not get some: it was MY lucky day - the extras I brought along were going to pay off.  We talked about why it was important to stay still (scissors are sharp!), he mistook the information, which happened to pay off for me - he was more worried that I was going to cut myself if he wiggled than him!  We had polite conversation and before he knew it - we were done.  I think that another part of what worked for him is that we did the cut in his own home... he didn't have much time to think in the car and have anxiety over the hair cut to come.

I don't think the "candy" presented at the end is a great idea - it needs to be right in front of their face so they have a reward (if you choose candy) to look at during what may be a stressful time for him or her.  If you see a big bowl of candy when you walk in the salon and you don't prefer your child to have that as a reward when they are done, please quietly ask the stylist to not offer it to your child.  You as a parent may want to have your own focal point as a reward.

To minimize the chaos that may be difficult for your child at a busy salon is to call ahead and find out when the slow times occur and go then!  You might find the good fortune of a stylist who can take the extra time to take a few more steps with your little one.

Mama:  don't expect perfection from the stylist or your child.  Every child wiggles, even if it is just a little.

Down and dirty

Sometimes a stylist may be rushing through a cut to make their numbers, especially at the lower end, quickie salons.  They have to get a client in and out of their chairs within 15 minutes - not a lot of time to calm the kiddo down before starting, explain the service, hear your ideas about what you want the hair to look like and clean up and check you out.  If the stylist hits it out of the park: tip well - they remember.

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Long and the short of it - a little self reflection

I can now declare- I have long hair.  Per the definition of Gene Juarez Academy: Long hair is hair that touches and falls on the shoulders.  For the first time since childhood, I can put my hair into a braid and have it stay.  Despite over a year in beauty school, I still feel like this is a novelty I am constantly amazed about and am trying to figure out something new to do with it!  I love, love, love it!

I was at a client's house last week and her husband (who has known me a LONG time) looked at me and said, "So... how long are you going to have your hair like this?" - he was talking about my red hair.

"long" and red

For years and years and years and years... really all of my life - until a little over a year ago - I had short blonde hair.  That may surprise many of my lovely friends, but it is true.  I now have *what I consider* long bright red hair.  Lately I have had a hard time finding a picture of myself that looks like my "current self" (that's why the picture above doesn't necessarily "touch my shoulders")!
Short blonde...
I don't feel like I even recognize myself.

I feel like I am getting a better understanding of women's need to (or not) cut their hair, the feeling of "growing it out" and having success with it.  I think this is the longest I have ever gone with out a cut!  I used to go every 6 weeks * religiously*  - every 6 weeks... and I was very particular.  Now, I am still pretty particular, but would be happy with a "trim" and blow out!

Your perception about something like your own hair is so significant - inside I still feel like I am a short haired blonde!  I don't scare as easily when I look in the mirror, as I used to!  This gives me a greater appreciation for when I make a significant change to a client's hair - such as going from short to long, or brown to blonde... or red!  Well, whatever you are up to - with your hair - these days, enjoy it!  If your not enjoying, really enjoying your hair... let's change it!

*no teasing

Family Fun - Convenient for Everyone!

Have Shears Will Travel!

Tonight I had the pleasure of coming to the Tinsley's house and taking care of the entire family: two hair feathers for two girls, two foils, and one toddler cut!

Karina's new highlights and cut

I wanted to let you know how it works when the whole family gets services together: We rotate through whomever is processing (like during the foil), everyone had dinner and took turns for their service.  Once it's time for the kiddos to go to bed, I worked on mom so she could get her new cut and highlights!  By getting your hair done at the same time, it leaves extra time for the family members to have additional questions answered and ideas born.  It was a clean slate for the entire family all in one night.

Chaucer's new cut

Arica Kildea just did KarinaSaphyre and Chaucer's hair and they all look great. If you need your hair cut or colored make Arica your first call. She'll come to you and she's great company too.  - Jim Tinsley

Added bonus:  I worked within their budget and time frame with on charge for the entire family.  It worked out great for everyone!

Hope this inspires some of you to include your family, making it easy to have one rate, one day for your services - ultimately maximizing your time and your dollar!

loved getting to hang out with Arica Kildea while she took care of Saphyre, Chaucer, and my hair today and put feathers in Olivia and Abby's hair! so great to not have to go anywhere for it and it all looks great! - Karina Tinsley

A cut every 6-8 weeks? I think so!

Your hair grows 1/4 inches a month - on average.  It also grows at different rates all over your head and you typically will develop split ends (yes it happens to everyone).

I have talked to woman after woman who has hair on the longer side that don't get their hair cut very often.  One of the guest's hair I cut this weekend had really, supper long hair.  It took me about 30 minutes to untangle and brush through her hair.  I ended up taking about 4 inches off - she hadn't had a cut in over 4 months and was completely overwhelmed by her own hair, which she liked to wear down and couldn't manage very well.  Well, we also ended up cutting some long bangs on her - she was super excited about that because it made her feel like she had an instant change that she could see, beyond the super long hair that she chose to keep.  Since it was such a change for her, I scheduled a time to see her next week to check on her new bangs to make sure they are still working and to see if she wanted to go shorter.

She went home with some detangling spray (I'm so glad) and an appointment set for 8 weeks from now to revisit the idea of making even more of a change.  This is setting my guest up for a routine of maintenance, feeling like she has a plan for her hair and ultimately success when she looks in the mirror.

Julianne Moore probably gets her hair cut often, but still maintains her length.

My cut used to be VERY inverted and precise.  If I let my cut grow out beyond 6-8 weeks, you can really see it!

Front View of Posh's famous inverted bob.

Observing Posh's famous inverted bob, to maintain the percision, you can assume that her hair is cut very frequently.

This would also be true for many men - they get their hair cut every 4-6 weeks, you can really see it if they don't!  It's great - this is one of the things that most men really get when it comes to their appearance and general maintenance.

The women I see coming in have generally waited soooo long to get it cut, colored or highlighted that it feels like a heavy burden after they have waited so long, rather than a complete pampering joy they could experience more often.  There are few things better than a precise cut and a great blow out!

An unexpected perk: the kids

As I travel from home to home creating beautiful hair, my primary clientele is Moms with kiddos.  One of the things I have really come to enjoy is the warm welcome I now receive.   Especially with 3, 4 and 5 year olds...

Last week I gave services to the entire family and the sweet little girl kept saying that she liked me because I was there to do hair and had red hair.

Apparently my red hair ups the fun factor.

On Friday, I went into a family's condo - they buzzed me in and I had to walk down a long hall to get into their home, so they knew I was there.  As I was walking down the hall, two kids were yelling "ARICCCAAAA!!!" Immediately they had me.

Today, I went to my friend's house to cut her daughter's hair and we were going to test out feathers as well (oh!  fun!).  As I come to the door, I hear "She's here!  She's Here!  Arica!"  With just a little bit of screaming.  Their Dad quickly moved aside to let me by!

That's just the last week - it just keeps getting better.  I love my mommies and their kiddos!
